Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
The Greenburgh Police Department is unique in that it is one of the few police agencies to supply emergency medical services as well law enforcement services to its constituents. The department has been providing medical treatment/transport since the early 1950s.
Level 4 Paramedic Care
In 1980, the department sent its first officers to paramedic school at Jacobi Hospital located in the Bronx, New York. With their successful completion of the program, the Greenburgh Police Department became the first service in Westchester County to provide level 4 Paramedic care to its community.
Incorporated Villages
On March 14, 1997, the Greenburgh Police Department expanded their ALS service into the six incorporated villages:
- Ardsley
- Dobbs Ferry
- Elmsford
- Hastings
- Irvington
- Tarrytown
Patients
The population that the EMS program is responsible for serving approximately 7,000 patients annually.
The EMS Unit has gone to great lengths in its efforts to remain "State of the Art " and keep up to date with the most current medical and rescue equipment available. This equipment currently includes:
- 12 semi-automatic defibrillators (AEDs)
- 4 Lucas chest compression devices
- 7 advanced cardiac monitors for the detection of heart attacks
- Advanced rescue extrication equipment
- Ballistic equipment
- Intra-osseous drills
- Powered stretchers
- Protective turn-out gear
- Pulse oximetry
- Video laryngoscopy units for difficult airway management
Due to the size of the town, Greenburgh Police Department Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Units will routinely transport patients to several hospitals located within lower Westchester County. Greenburgh EMS Units will generally transport patients to the nearest facility or if the situation allows, the facility of their choice.
These hospitals are within a 10 minute transport distance of Greenburgh and regularly include but are not limited to:
- Lawrence Hospital
- Nyack Hospital
- Phelps Memorial Hospital Medical Center
- Saint John’s Riverside Hospital
- Saint John’s Riverside Pavilion at Dobbs Ferry
- Westchester County Medical Center
- White Plains Hospital
The Greenburgh Police department currently has an authorized strength of 116 police officers. All of these officers regardless of rank or position have received certification to provide basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The department currently has 31 certified Paramedics, and 12 Emergency Medical Technicians.
Basic Emergency Medical Technician Program
All members of the patrol division are afforded the opportunity to become Emergency Medical Technicians. Over the last year the department has been providing the NYS Basic Emergency Medical Technician program in house. This program is conducted in conjunction with the Westchester Community College. This 160 hour program trains personnel to provide appropriate care to the victims of medical and traumatic emergencies.
The police officers and paramedics assigned to the Paramedic Unit utilize NYS Department of Health certified ambulances and fly-cars (quick response vehicles) to respond to emergencies. A minimum of 2 paramedics are assigned to each tour of duty, although it is quiet common to have 4 or more per tour
